Dog Man

She’s the only one, who talks to me.
At the produce counter, they yell at me

They say I touch too much of it.
A sale they’d just as soon forfeit.

I walk past the men on the porch,
Who are discussing that day’s work.

A nod hello, just to acknowledge my passing,
Seems to be too great a gesture, too distracting.

For these dogs I walk, I earn a stipend.
The reward is far and beyond that end.

I know my days are modest and simply roll by.
Maybe some folks fill more important roles than I.

But these dogs hold me in great favor.
I’m their Milk Bone and rawhide savior.

I walk their pace, and amble their directions.
I bring together their social connections.

That is how we came to meet the nice lady,
Who will pat their heads and always be friendly.

Only she will take time to come talk to me.
I guess I matter to Ms Andrzejewski.
